Discovering the benefits of solar water features can be a game-changer for your outdoor space. Not only do they provide a soothing and calming atmosphere, but they also offer a unique way to harness renewable energy.

One of the most significant advantages of solar water features is their ability to save you money on your energy bills. According to the article, a solar-powered water feature can save up to 70% of the energy costs compared to traditional electric pumps.

A well-designed solar water feature can also increase the value of your property. Studies have shown that solar-powered water features can increase property values by up to 10%.

DIY and Building

You can create a solar fountain using a bird bath, large bowl, or planter that holds at least a gallon of water and gets some sun.

Inexpensive floating pumps work well, all for under $20, and are perfect for solar fountains. They come with 10 or so different configurations to choose from.

A tall birdbath can dry out quickly, so it's better to keep the pump on a low bubbler. Refill the water every few mornings and bring the pump inside every winter.

Any large tub will work for a solar fountain, and the larger it is, the better. You can also fill the tub with stones for birds and bees to land on and safely drink from.

Some solar fountains have a higher battery capacity, allowing them to work out of sunlight for a time. Others have tasteful lights on them to work at night.

If you're looking to create a more complex solar spillover fountain, you'll need to plug any drainage holes on the bottom planter and use waterproof clear silicone and rocks to seal them off.

You can use a small terra cotta pot or a plastic pot with a hole drilled in the bottom to create the top bowl of the fountain. Place the pond pump in the middle of the large basin and use silicone to glue it down.

Drape the cord on the rim of the pot and attach the clear tubing to the outlet of the pump. Run it up through the hole in the bottom of the overturned pot and put the pot on top of the pump.

Fill the bottom planter with river rock, up to two inches below the rim, and add the smaller bowl on top of the pot. Use moldable silicone, like Sugru, to seal up the hole and make it watertight.

Design and Maintenance

Solar water features require regular maintenance to keep them running efficiently and effectively.

For optimal performance, the solar panels should be cleaned every 2-3 months to ensure maximum energy absorption.

A clogged pump can reduce the flow rate of the water feature, so it's essential to check the pump filter regularly and clean or replace it as needed.

Regularly inspecting the system's electrical components can help prevent electrical shocks and ensure safe operation.

Rocks or Filler

Rocks or filler can be used to create a cohesive look and cover the base of your DIY water feature.

We recommend using river rocks, like the ones we got at Lowes, to achieve this look. Piling them a little above the water can provide a safe place for birds and bugs to drink water from and cool off.

Adding rocks all the way to the edge of one side of the fountain can also help cover the cord that runs to the solar panel, as we did in our setup.

Algae

Algae is a common issue in water features, but it can be kept under control with the right methods.

Algae grows more with lots of sun exposure, so placing your water feature in a shady spot can help minimize its growth.

Aqueous plants like water Lilies can also help regulate algae by offering shade and competing with it for nutrients and sun.

Moving water, like the kind generated by a solar fountain, can also help keep algae at bay.

Using vinegar is a good option for small water features that can be drained and rinsed regularly, or those in shady spots. One cap-full (about 1 Tablespoon) of white vinegar per week can keep algae under control.

However, vinegar may not be the best option for larger or full-sun water features, as it can clog the fountain pump with algae.

Algae control additives, on the other hand, are a good choice for larger or full-sun water features. Only a little is needed, and it can be added about once a week.

It's worth noting that birds may not like to bathe or drink from water features treated with algae control additives, so it's a good idea to provide an alternative source of water for them.

Choosing the right solar powered fountain can be a bit overwhelming, but let's break it down.

For small features, a solar panel with a minimum of 3W is recommended.

The pump flow rate is also an important consideration, with 150-500 LPH suiting most garden applications.

In fact, most solar fountains come with a pump flow rate in this range, making them perfect for small to medium-sized gardens.

To ensure your solar fountain works seamlessly, look for an IP68 waterproof rating, which means it's designed for continuous submersion.

Operating voltage is another crucial factor, with most solar fountains running on 6V-12V DC systems.

If you're looking for a solar fountain with flexibility, consider one with different attachments for various spray patterns.

Some models even come with a wired solar panel that can be placed in a sunny spot, away from the fountain.

If you're not ready to commit to a solar fountain, you can also consider plug-in electric fountains that can be plugged into a standard outdoor electrical outlet.

Solar-powered water features are another great option, with a solar panel and pump set that can be placed in direct sunlight.

In some cases, the cord from the pump to the panel can be up to 16 feet long, giving you more flexibility in where you place the fountain.

If you want the best of both worlds, consider a solar fountain with a battery backup, which allows you to run it after the sun goes down.

Here are some key features to consider when choosing a solar-powered fountain:

In order for the fountain to function, there must be direct sunlight hitting the solar panel.
