Display wood boxes are a great way to add a touch of elegance to any room. They can be used to display wine, decorative items, or even as a storage solution.

A beautifully crafted wood box can be a stunning centerpiece for a dining table or coffee table. For example, a wood box with a wine bottle display can hold up to 6 wine bottles, depending on their size.

You can also use display wood boxes to showcase your favorite decorative items, such as vintage figurines or collectible items. This can be a great way to add some personality to a room without cluttering it with too many objects.

Display wood boxes can be made from a variety of types of wood, including oak, maple, and cherry. Each type of wood has its own unique characteristics and benefits, so you can choose the one that best fits your needs.

Design and Construction

The display wood box is typically made from high-quality woods such as cherry, walnut, or oak, which provide a rich and durable finish.

These woods are often chosen for their density and stability, making them ideal for a display box that needs to hold its shape and protect its contents.

The wood is carefully selected and cut to ensure a precise fit, and the joints are crafted to be strong and secure, allowing the box to withstand regular use.

Background

I was inspired to make a box as a gift for someone, and I started brainstorming ideas. I had a piece of red gum from Philip Cranford of Cranford Design Works that I wanted to use.

Philip Cranford also supplied me with white oak in the past, and he gave me the red gum as a bonus.

Cutting Miteres

Cutting miters can be a bit tricky, but it's a crucial step in building a box. I learned this the hard way by cutting the miters at the table saw.

You can use a miter saw for this job, which will give you a continuous grain all the way around. However, it's not always necessary.

I was able to match up the grain pretty well using the table saw, so unless you have a very trained eye, you won't even notice the difference.

Cutting the Spline

Cutting the spline is a crucial step in the construction of a box. I used a combination blade on my tablesaw to cut splines all the way around the box in two different spots.

To achieve a precise fit for the spline material, I used the drum sander. Walnut was the material I chose for this project.

Marking where each of the splines will be in the long piece is essential. I cut them out on the bandsaw.

Gluing in the splines requires attention to detail. You want to make sure they're seated all the way down into the groove.

A flush trim saw and a bandsaw are used to cut off excess spline material. This step is also necessary to trim the bottom of the box.

Sanding is a time-consuming but necessary step after cutting the splines.

Milling Walnut Stock

Walnut is a medium-density wood that's relatively easy to work with, but it often comes with a challenge: knots. Finding straight and clear walnut in good widths can be tough.

To mill walnut stock, start by cutting enough wood for your project to 5/8 in. thickness, preferably in 5-in. widths and 20-in. lengths. Leave the sides in one 20-in.-long piece.

You'll need three 5-in.-wide by 20-in.-long boards, which you'll mark with a large triangle on the faces to keep track of the order and orientation of the parts.

Cut one box side, one top side, and one top trim piece from each board, in that order, to ensure the grain matches between the top and sides in the finished box.

To do this, rip 2-in.-wide pieces for the box sides, then 7/8-in.-wide pieces for the top sides, and finally 1-1/8-in.-wide pieces for the top trim.

Plane the top trim pieces to 3/8 in. thickness and set them aside for now.

To keep track of the orientation and jumbling of the parts, mark the joints on the top edges, the ends, and the faces of the workpieces.

One of the key benefits of wooden wine crates is their versatility, making them suitable for various settings, from rustic to modern decor.

They are also user-friendly, easy to assemble and disassemble as needed.

In terms of aesthetics, wooden wine crates are elegant and can add a touch of sophistication to any room.

However, they do require regular dusting and care to maintain their appearance.
