The aircon filter is usually located behind the air conditioner's grille or cover, which can be found at the front or side of the unit.
In most cases, the grille or cover is held in place by screws, clips, or a latch, so make sure to check for these before attempting to remove it.
For window-mounted air conditioners, the filter is often situated near the top or side of the unit, and can be accessed by sliding out the top panel or removing a side panel.
Some air conditioners have a removable front panel that gives you direct access to the filter, while others may require you to remove the side panel or grille.

Where to Find the Aircon Filter
The aircon filter can be found in a few different locations, but don't worry, I'm here to guide you through it.
It's usually near the thermostat in your home in a return duct, or right next to your AC system's air handler. For most units, the filter's location is at the point where the return duct enters the air handler.
In most homes' central heating and air units, you can find the air filter in one of two locations: the return air register or the air handler. The return air register is an opening in the ceiling or a wall where air first enters the system.
The air filter may be part of an air handler, an indoor component of the system. The air handler usually sits in the attic or basement, where it cools the circulating air. Sometimes the air handler in the home is set inside a closet or crawl space as well.
You can also find the air filter inside the return air vents. Some homes have multiple return air vents, each with its own filter. If you don’t see a filter in the main return duct or air handler, check the return vents in different rooms.
The air filter may be located in your air handler unit, which is usually in your attic, basement, or utility closet. Check your air handler and look for a small slot around 1-2 inches in size.
Here are the most common places to check:
- Return air register
- Air handler
- Return air vents
- Air handler unit
Remember to remove any grill covers or screws to access the air filter, and don't be afraid to get a little dirty to find it!
HVAC System Components and Locations
The aircon filter is usually located inside the home, either in a return air duct or the air handler.
Horizontal HVAC units are often found in attics, large basements, or garages, and the filter fits in a slot on the air return side of the unit.
Vertical HVAC units are typically found in smaller basements or crawl spaces, and the filter slides into a slot above or below the HVAC unit.
Some HVAC systems have a return in each room, so be sure to check behind each return grill for a filter.
Here's a quick guide to help you locate your air filters:
- Horizontal units: slot on the air return side
- Vertical units: slot above or below the unit
- Other systems: behind the return air grill on the wall, ceiling, or utility closet door

Finding and Replacing the Aircon Filter
The aircon filter is usually located near the thermostat in your home, specifically in a return duct. You can also find it right next to your AC system's air handler.
In most homes, the central air system has the filter in one of two locations. The return air register is an opening in the ceiling or a wall where air first enters the system, and the air filter sits across the return air opening.
The air filter may also be part of an air handler, which is an indoor component of the system. Inside the air handler, the air filter can be located at the top, underside, or side.
To replace your air filter, turn off your AC to prevent dust from getting pulled into the system. Then, locate the filter, which could be in the return duct, air handler, or return air vents.
Check the filter size by looking at the side of the old filter. The new filter should match this size. Insert the new filter, making sure the arrows on the filter's frame point in the direction of airflow.
Here are the most common places to check for the aircon filter:
- Return duct
- Air handler
- Return air vents
