Building a wallbed can be a fun and rewarding DIY project. You can save space and add a cozy sleeping nook to your home.
First, you'll need to choose a type of wallbed that suits your needs. A murphy bed is a popular option that folds up against the wall, while a murphy desk bed combines a workspace with a sleeping area.
Measure your room carefully to determine the ideal location for your wallbed. A standard wallbed typically requires a space of 6-8 feet wide and 8-10 feet tall.
Consider the weight capacity of your wallbed, as well as the type of mattress and bed frame you plan to use. A sturdy bed frame can support up to 1,000 pounds, while a lower-quality frame may only support 500 pounds.

Layout Front Panels
To create the front face of your DIY Murphy bed cabinet, you'll need two sheets of plywood cut to size. Apply edge banding to the three outer sides of each piece, but not to the sides that touch each other in the center.
Measure in 1/4 inch and draw a line on the outer left and right panel. This will help you center the DIY Murphy bed frame with a 1/4 inch overlap on each side.
Use a pencil to trace around each strut of the bed frame on the plywood panels. This will provide a template to show where to add glue. Remove the frame from the plywood, add glue, and then attach the bed frame to the panels.
Attach the bed frame to the face panels using 1 1/4 inch #8 screws, making sure to pre-drill before inserting the screw.

Cutting and Assembling
To cut the plywood and boards to size, you'll need a table saw or circular saw. A table saw is the preferred choice, but a circular saw with a guide can also get the job done.
Having an extra person to help with cutting the plywood down to size will make the process much easier. A 12 inch sliding compound miter saw from Dewalt is a great tool for cutting the boards down in length.
You'll need to cut the plywood parts as laid out in the kit instructions, and pre-drill all the holes for assembly. This will ensure a smooth and secure fit for the wallbed frame.
Here are the steps to cut the plywood and boards to size:
- Cut the plywood down to size using a table saw or circular saw.
- Use a circular saw with a guide if you don't own a table saw.

Connect Mattress Straps

To connect mattress straps, you'll need to measure about 16 inches in from each corner. Attach the elastic strap using short screws.
The elastic straps are included in the Murphy Bed Kit, so make sure you have those on hand.
I've found that keeping a mattress pad and mattress topper on makes it quick and easy to make up the bed for company.
Cabinet and Hardware
You can purchase a complete DIY Murphy bed cabinet and hardware for around $1250-$2500, which includes pre-made cabinets and hardware that you can assemble yourself. This option is great for those who want a quick and easy DIY project.
The hardware kits for DIY Murphy beds can range from $300-$500, depending on the brand and size of the bed. Some popular brands include CreateABed and BeStar, which offer reasonably priced and well-reviewed DIY Murphy bed solutions.
To assemble the hardware, you'll need to attach the cabinet to the wall with L-brackets, fasten the rotating brackets to the inside of the cabinet, screw the mattress frame to the rotating mechanism, and attach the stand to the mattress frame. This process can be a bit involved, but it's doable with the right instructions and tools.

Attach Rails, Headboard, Footboard
Attaching the rails, headboard, and footboard is a crucial step in completing your cabinet and hardware project. Pre-drill all holes before attaching anything to avoid any damage or complications.
To attach the side rails, headboard, and footboard, use 2 inch long screws. This is a specific detail to keep in mind when assembling your cabinet pieces.
The head and footboard are connected to the side rails using 2 inch long screws. Make sure to follow your specific set of plans to ensure accurate measurements and placement.
Assembling the bed frame and cabinet pieces can be a challenge, especially when working in a narrow space. I had to assemble the bed frame in the final space because the stairway was too narrow to fit the assembled frame.
Use your plans to guide you when assembling the bed frame and installing hardware. This will help you avoid any mistakes and ensure a smooth completion of your project.

Doors
I used pressure-sensitive, adhesive birch veneer to create a chevron effect on the front of the cabinet.
This stuff is so easy to trim with a box cutter and apply using some pressure. I loved working with it.
You can stain the doors to match the cabinet for a cohesive look.
Finishing and Painting
Pre-painting or staining your wall bed parts is crucial before assembly, as it's difficult to access all surfaces once the bed is in place.
If you choose to paint, prime all sides of each part to ensure a smooth finish. If staining, pre-staining your parts will be helpful.
To prepare your wall bed for painting or staining, remove the hardware and sand the wood with 220 grit sandpaper, focusing on rough areas and any areas that need to be smoothed out.
Either paint or stain the project, and if you choose to stain, consider using a brush on polyurethane to seal the project.

Either paint or stain the project, and consider using a brush on polyurethane to seal the wood if you choose to stain.
Add Trim
Adding trim to your DIY Murphy Bed is a great way to give it a polished finish. You can add trim around the top and bottom of the unit, just like I did with 1×6 boards.
First, attach the trim to the header, placing it flush with the front bottom of the header. This will create a small gap between the trim and the door portion.
For the sides of the unit, add the same trim as the top and bottom. Make sure to attach it flush with the vertical boards.
Next, add the trim to the front face panels. Start with a piece that goes flush with the left side of the face panel and the top of the face panel. Leave a small gap between the top of this board and the upper 1×6 trim.
Attach both vertical pieces and then the top horizontal piece, leaving a small gap between this piece and the top 1×6 molding.
Finally, add the lower trim, leaving about an inch of space between it and the baseboard. This is necessary so the door can pivot.
Here's a summary of the trim pieces used in my build:
Remember to attach the trim carefully, making sure it's secure and even. With a little patience and attention to detail, your DIY Murphy Bed will look like a professional job!
Installation and Anchoring
First, make sure to anchor your Murphy Bed to the wall. I saw an article where a woman was killed by a murphy bed that wasn’t secured to the wall.
Use L Brackets to secure the header to at least two wall studs. Clamp the header onto the side panels, drill pilot holes, and screw it all together. Mount the header of the bed frame to the wall.
To anchor the bed, follow these steps:
- Clamp the header onto the side panels, drill pilot holes, and screw it all together.
- Mount the header of the bed frame to the wall.
- Connect the lift pistons to the bed platform and frame as directed.
Push the bed frame up and slightly past the front of the cabinet unit. Attach the gas springs. This can be a bit tricky and will definitely require another person to help hold the bed while the other person is installing the stoppers and gas springs.
Use a stud finder to find the studs in your wall. Next, push the cabinet unit against the wall. Attach the top header to the wall at each stud location using 3 inch wood screws. After attaching the top, I put a couple screws through the lower portion of the headboard near where the mattress will eventually go.
Attach the cabinet to the wall with 2 L-brackets. Press the cabinet against the wall as close as you can. Find 2 studs in the wall near the center of the cabinet. Arrange the cabinet so the 2 studs are evenly-spaced inside the cabinet.
