Building a storage twin bed for your home can be a fun and rewarding DIY project. You'll need to start by choosing the right materials, such as sturdy wood and a reliable storage system.

The average cost of building a storage twin bed can range from $100 to $500, depending on the materials and design you choose. This includes the cost of the bed frame, storage drawers, and any additional features.

A storage twin bed can provide up to 20 cubic feet of storage space, making it perfect for small rooms or homes with limited closet space. This can be especially helpful for kids' rooms, where toys and clothes can quickly accumulate.

Consider adding a headboard with built-in shelves or a storage compartment to maximize your bed's storage potential. This can be a great way to keep books, lamps, or other bedroom essentials within easy reach.

You can also use under-bed storage, such as rolling storage bins or containers, to store items like out-of-season clothes or linens. This is a great way to maximize the use of your bedroom's floor space.

Some headboards have built-in shelves or drawers, providing additional storage and display space for your room.

Storage Twin Bed Options can add a lot of functionality to a room.

The Elise Bed is a great example of a storage twin bed, made in Malaysia with four below nooks for storing various goods.

Its elegant white finish on a wood frame makes any room brighter, and the inset paneling at the footboard and headboard adds a classic style.

A box spring is not necessary with the Elise Bed, as it has internal slats for mattress support, requiring only assembly instead.

Some storage twin beds, like the Elise, have a higher profile than standard twin beds.

The storage bed design can also include features like rock climbing holds that act as steps, adding a fun element to the bed.

These features can be especially helpful for kids who have a lot of toys and need a place to store them.

To build a storage twin bed, you'll need some specific materials. IKEA's TROFAST 37 x 17 storage shelves are a great starting point.

A 96 x 48 melamine (white) board is needed for the bed's surface. Binding screws, wood screws, and a Kreg Jig are also necessary for assembly.

Don't forget to pick up some 1 ¼ inch binding screws and twelve 2 inch wood screws. If you're feeling adventurous, you can even add some rock climbing holds to your bed frame.

Measurements matter, and a standard twin mattress is 39 x 75 inches. The final dimensions of the bed frame can be larger, like 42 x 78 inches and 30 ½ inches tall, including an 8 inch mattress.

To ensure your bed frame is sturdy, predrill 3 holes, then attach the boards using wood screws.

Measure Your Space

Before you start building your DIY bed frame with storage, take a moment to measure your space carefully. This will ensure that your bed frame fits comfortably in the room and that you have enough clearance for bins or drawers to slide in and out easily.

Measure your mattress to determine the dimensions of your bed frame. For example, a standard twin mattress measures 39 x 75 inches.

Consider the final dimensions of your bed frame, including the height and any additional features like storage bins or drawers. In my case, I designed a DIY twin platform bed with storage that measures 42 x 78 inches and 30 ½ inches tall, including an 8 inch mattress.

You can customize your DIY platform bed with storage to work exactly how you need it to. Whether you go with a twin storage platform bed with drawers or a raised bed frame with storage, you'll end up with something functional and stylish.

  • Under-bed storage
  • Headboard with storage

DIY Instructions

To build a storage twin bed, you'll need a solid foundation, which is why it's essential to use a sturdy frame made of solid wood or engineered wood, as seen in our design plans.

Start by assembling the frame using the provided hardware and instructions. Make sure all the pieces are securely attached to prevent any accidents or damage.

You'll also need to attach the storage drawers, which should be made of durable materials like MDF or plywood, and have smooth-gliding drawer slides for easy access. Our design plans recommend using 18-inch wide drawers with a 6-inch depth.

5. Mariana Grey

The Mariana Grey bed is a great choice for a cozy hideaway. It's made in Malaysia from smooth wood and features a pull-out trundle for comfortable guest lodging.

The Mariana has a regal appearance thanks to its cut-out panels accented with raised molding. This gives it a touch of elegance that complements any color scheme.

The bed requires assembly, but it's well-designed and manufactured to prevent any issues. The frame is reinforced to prevent the bed foundation from squeaking and slipping.

The Mariana Grey bed features three storage drawers with gold-tone metal ring handles for added functionality. This is a great way to keep your bedroom organized and clutter-free.

The bed's sleek and polished design makes it easy to match with any existing furniture in your home. It's a versatile piece that can fit in with any style or decor.

Victorian Metal Frame

The Victorian Metal Frame is a great option for those who want a stylish and functional bed frame. It eliminates the need for box springs, which is a big plus.

With 11 inches of vertical clearance, you'll have plenty of space to store items like bedding, luggage, bins, books, and more. This is especially useful in small rooms where storage is limited.

The bed frame also features Foam Padding for Noise-Free Sleep, which means you'll no longer have to worry about squeaking sounds disturbing your rest. This is a game-changer for anyone who values a good night's sleep.

The Mattress Anti Skid Protection on the bed frame ensures that your mattress stays in place, preventing it from sliding or shifting during the night.

Step 4: Build Side Panels

Building the side panels of your twin platform bed frame is a crucial step in creating a sturdy and comfortable bed. You'll need to start by laying out piece C, painted side down, and then placing one A piece along its short edge, lining up the bottom edges.

Mark where the A piece stops with a pencil, and then remove the A piece. Next, you'll need to drill three pocket holes in piece C, one at each edge and one in the middle.

Use your Kreg jig to create these pocket holes, making sure to line up the edges carefully. Now, place piece C up against something heavy, with one A piece sandwiched between them, creating an L shape. The painted sides should be facing out, and the bottom edges of the boards should line up on one end.

Insert a Kreg screw into each pocket hole to attach the two pieces together. Repeat this process with the other C piece, but place the A and D pieces on opposite sides this time.

Here's a summary of the steps to build a side panel:

Once you've built the side panels, you'll need to attach them to the Trofast shelves. Find the center of piece E and predrill two holes from the top along the center line. Then, attach piece D to create a T shape.

Place each side panel at each end of your Trofast shelves, making sure the white finished piece is facing outward and touching the ground. Finally, predrill holes from the inside of the Trofast shelves into the center of the side panel boards, and then attach with screws.

Step 5: Assemble

As you're assembling the twin platform bed with storage, you'll need to take all the pieces into the room where your finished bed will be. This will make it easier to visualize the final product and ensure everything fits together correctly.

You'll need a buddy to help you line up the edges of the Trofast shelves and hold them together while you attach them. This is a crucial step, as it will ensure the shelves are secure and even.

To attach the shelves, predrill holes for the binding screws from the inside of one of the shelves, so your drill goes through both shelves end pieces. This will give you a solid foundation for the shelves.

You'll need to attach the binding screws in each predrilled hole and tighten them so that the two shelves are held together tightly with no gap between them. This will create a sturdy base for your storage bed.

Next, you'll need to attach the side panel to the shelves. Using your Kreg jig, drill a pocket hole on the inside of your side panel about an inch from the top of piece C. Repeat this step on the other side.

Now, place the long 2 x 4 (E) so that each end sits on top of the 2 x 4's (D) you attached to the side panels. Predrill holes and attach with 2 screws.

Here's a quick checklist of the steps to attach the side panel:

  • Drill a pocket hole on the inside of the side panel about an inch from the top of piece C
  • Repeat the step on the other side
  • Place the long 2 x 4 (E) on top of the 2 x 4's (D)
  • Predrill holes and attach with 2 screws

This will give you a solid foundation for your bed frame.
