Materials for Building

To build a DIY storage bed, you'll need some essential materials. Two IKEA TROFAST 37 x 17 storage shelves are a must-have for this project.

You'll also need TROFAST bins in various colors and sizes to store your belongings. These bins will keep your bed area organized and clutter-free.

A 48 x 96 inch pine plywood is required for the bed frame. Make sure to check the cut list for specific measurements.

A 12 ft. 2 x 4 is also necessary for the frame. Again, refer to the cut list for accurate measurements.

For the top surface, you'll need a 96 x 48 melamine (white) board. This will provide a smooth and durable finish.

In addition to these materials, you'll need some hardware and tools. Four 1 ¼ inch binding screws, twelve 2 inch wood screws, and a Kreg Jig are essential for assembling the bed frame.

You'll also need 1 ¼ inch Kreg screws and two rock climbing holds for added functionality. These holds can be used as ladder supports or decorative elements.

Finally, don't forget to pick up a twin mattress and some paint for the bed frame. A gloss finish is recommended for easy cleaning and maintenance.

Step 3: Paint

Paint is a great way to add some personality to your DIY storage bed. Use a small foam roller to paint the inside and one outer side of both Trofast shelves for a nice finish without brush marks.

Two coats of paint are a good idea, letting the first coat dry for about an hour before applying the second coat.

You'll also need to paint one side and the edges of all your pine plywood pieces, but leave the 2 x 4 pieces unpainted.

Step 5: Assemble

Assembling the twin bed frame with storage requires some careful planning and execution.

You'll need a buddy for this step, as you'll be working with large pieces of wood. Place the Trofast shelves next to each other, end to end, with the painted side facing out.

Line up the edges of the shelves on all sides and have your buddy hold them together. Predrill holes for the binding screws from the inside of one of the shelves so that your drill goes through both shelves end pieces.

Your binding screws will be near each of the 4 corners. Then place your binding screws in each predrilled hole and tighten them so that the two shelves are held together tightly with no gap between them.

Now, place the long 2 x 4 (E) so that each end sits on top of the 2 x 4's (D) you attached to the side panels. Predrill holes and attach with 2 screws.

To attach the Trofast shelves to the side panels, predrill holes from the inside of the Trofast shelves so that the holes go into the center of the side panel boards (A). Then attach with screws.

You'll also need to attach piece B along the front of your twin bed frame, using the pocket holes you drilled at each end (on piece C) to attach it to the bed frame. Add one more Kreg screw in the center pocket hole for extra support.

Finally, attach the rock climbing holds at the end of the bed according to the package instructions.
