To create the drawer box, you can use a table saw to cut a ¼″ dado ¼″ deep ½″ from the bottom edge of the drawer box pieces to insert the ¼″ plywood bottom.

Alternatively, you can use a router or skip the dadoes altogether and glue and staple or screw the bottom onto the drawer box once it's assembled.

Assembling the drawer box involves using ¾″ pocket holes and 1 ¼″ pocket hole screws, which are a convenient way to build a strong and stable drawer box.

The drawer box is then attached to the nightstand using glue and staples or screws, just like the sides and top.

Cut the legs of your Mid Century Modern Nightstand using a jig saw. You can use 1x scraps, a 1x board, or some ¾″ plywood for this.

Draw a template onto a scrap piece of poplar to cut out the legs. I used a scrap piece of poplar for this.

Sanding is a crucial step after cutting out the legs. Sand the first one well to smooth out any rough edges.

Trace the template three more times onto the board and cut these out the same way as the first one.

For the drawer box, you'll need to cut ¾″ plywood pieces, along with a ¼″ plywood piece for the drawer bottom. Cut the pieces according to the design.

To assemble the drawer box, use ¾″ pocket holes and 1 ¼″ pocket hole screws. This is a great opportunity to practice using pocket holes, a handy technique for building strong joints without visible screws.

A table saw is ideal for cutting a ¼″ dado in the drawer box pieces, but if you don't have one, a router will work as well. Alternatively, you can skip the dadoes altogether and simply glue and staple or screw the bottom onto the drawer box once it's assembled.

The inside box is the foundation of this nightstand build. It's a box within a box with legs and a drawer.

To start, cut a 15" wide piece of ¾" plywood into two sides, two pieces for the top and bottom, and one middle shelf.

Apply iron on edge banding to the front edges of these pieces before assembling. This will cover the edges and make the build look smoother.

You can use ¾" pocket holes and 1 ¼" pocket hole screws or 1 ¼" wood screws to assemble the main box. The choice is yours, but pocket holes and screws were used in this build.

The inside box will be covered by the outside box, so all the joinery will be hidden.

Cut ¾″ plywood pieces for the drawer box and a ¼″ plywood piece for the drawer bottom. You can use a table saw to create a ¼″ dado ¼″ deep ½″ from the bottom edge of the drawer box pieces to insert the ¼″ plywood bottom.

A router can also work for this step, or you can skip the dadoes altogether and cut the bottom a little bigger. Then, simply glue and staple or screw it onto the bottom of the drawer box once it's assembled.

You can use ¾″ pocket holes and 1 ¼″ pocket hole screws to assemble the drawer box. This is the method used in the example.

The drawer box should be assembled before installing it onto the slides. Make sure to set the drawer on some ¼″ scrap blocks to get it about ¼″ up from the bottom.

To add a professional finish to your midcentury modern nightstand, you'll need to apply a clear coat. Three coats of Minwax Helmsman clear coat are sufficient to achieve a smooth, glossy finish.
