John Cobb

John Cobb was an English cabinetmaker whose work was once overshadowed by Thomas Chippendale but is now regarded as among England's greatest furniture makers. He was born around 1710 and died in 1778.

Cobb was in partnership with William Vile from around 1750 to 1765, and their firm became one of the most important among London's cabinetmakers. This partnership produced some incredible pieces, including a superb mahogany jewel cabinet inlaid with ivory for Queen Charlotte.

Cobb's furniture style changed over time, shifting from an Anglicized Rococo style to an elegant Neoclassical style in the 1770s. He was heavily influenced by the famous Neoclassical designer Robert Adam.

Cobb supplied furniture to King George III of England until 1765, when Vile retired and Cobb apparently ceased work for royalty. He continued to work alone until his death in 1778.

A bill dated 1772 shows that Cobb supplied a marquetried commode with gilt bronze mounts and pair of vase stands to Corsham Court in Wiltshire.
