Exploring the Hearst Castle Indoor Pool and Its History

Built between 1927-1934, the Roman Pool complex was designed to contain an exercise room, sweat baths, a handball court, and dressing rooms, similar to an ancient Roman bath. The pool is located indoors and its water was heated as in a tepidarium.

The Roman Pool is decorated from ceiling to floor with 1" square mosaic tiles called smalti, which are either colored or clear with fused gold inside. The intense colors and shimmering gold of the tiles create a breathtaking effect.

Some of the designs created by the tiles were developed by muralist Camille Solon, who drew inspiration from the 5th Century Mausoleum of Galla Placidia. The tiles are made of real gold, 24-carat, which shines against the lapis blue tiles.

The Roman Pool was not used much during Hearst's lifetime, as he and his guests preferred the larger and more showy outdoor pool. Some of his guests didn't even know this pool existed, as it's set away from the main house.
