Our Selection and Testing Process

I came into this project with high hopes, but so far, I haven't been blown away by my options. Prices for both real and artificial trees vary widely, making direct comparisons challenging. A live 3-gallon fiddle-leaf fig tree at Home Depot sells for about $90, and it has the potential to grow to around 7 feet.

For this list, I set out to find reasonably priced artificial trees under $200 or, if possible, under $100. I scrutinized and tugged at the trunk, twigs, and leaves of each tree, comparing them with the real thing online or in real life.

Our Selection and Testing Process

I came into this project with high hopes, but so far I haven't been blown away by my options. Prices for both real and artificial trees vary widely, making direct comparisons tricky.

A live 3-gallon fiddle-leaf fig tree can cost around $90 at Home Depot, but at Bloomscape, a similar tree is about $229. Generally speaking, pricier artificial trees look more authentic than cheaper ones.

For each tree, I noted how it was shipped, whether it came out of the box misshaped, and whether it had odd smells. I scrutinized and tugged at the trunk, twigs, and leaves to compare them with the real thing online or in real life.

I bent the twigs and branches to note how pliable they are, so you can arrange them according to preference. Pricier artificial trees may look more convincing, but it's not necessarily twice as nice.

I viewed the trees in sunlight and a dark corner, and I pored over the fine print on return policies. This list is by no means comprehensive, but I'll add to it as I continue shopping.

That Disappointed Us

We've all been there - excited to bring home a new plant, only to be disappointed by its appearance or performance. Some fake plants we tested had a strong chemical scent right out of the box, like Artiplanto's Fafa Artificial Fiddle Leaf Potted Plant.

The underside of some fake plant leaves lacked color, making them look less realistic. Artiplanto's Oli Artificial Olive Tree Potted Plant was one example, where the leaves lacked color on the underside.

Some fake plants felt stiff or hard to the touch, like Artiplanto's Philo Artificial Philodendron Potted Plant, which had almost too much leaf detail.

The leaves on some fake plants felt rough to the touch, like West Elm's Faux Potted Fiddle Leaf Fig Plant and Pottery Barn's Faux Fiddle Leaf Fig Tree, which reminded me of rip-stop nylon.

The quality of fake plants can vary greatly, and it's essential to inspect them carefully before making a purchase.

The leaves on fake plants can be surprisingly realistic, making them a great choice for adding some greenery to your space. The CB2 faux money tree, for example, has leaves with nice detailing and a slight sheen that's similar to a live version.

Fake plants are a game-changer for interior design because they're lower maintenance than live plants. They're also eco-friendly, versatile, and can be arranged in creative ways that live plants can't.

Some fake plants can even live outside, as long as they're UV treated to prevent color fading and leaf cracking. This means you can enjoy your fake plants year-round, regardless of the weather.

Fake plants can last nearly forever with proper care, which is a huge advantage over live plants.

How It Looks

When evaluating the style and design of artificial plants, pay attention to the underside of the leaves, as it can be a telltale sign of quality. This is where manufacturers often skimp on detailing.

The trunk of the plant is also worth examining. Is it notched and textured, or smooth like the real thing? Higher-end options often have real bark at the base to make it look realistic.

Notice how the color of a real plant transitions from twig to stem. On some very-fake-looking plants, a leaf is simply stuck onto the twig, like a pen cap.

Considering the style of the room can also help you choose the right artificial plant. For example, a bohemian and laid-back room might be complemented by a palm or fiddle-leaf fig, while a more traditional look might be better suited to a classic ficus or fern.

Try New Materials

If you're looking to make a statement with your decor, try using sculptural materials like metal florals or suede houseplants. These unique pieces can add a whimsical touch to your space without pretending to be real plants.

Realistic-looking fake plants can be a bit boring, but you can make them more interesting by pairing them with sculptural elements. For example, you could add a metal floral arrangement to a vase or place a suede houseplant on a shelf.

Silk plants can also be a great option, but they do require some maintenance to keep them looking their best. According to interior designer Stephanie Brown, silk plants "need to be included in your dusting routine or else they will reveal themselves as faux very quickly!"
