The Dust Stopper Unit Separator is another option that requires a 5-gallon bucket to collect debris and dust. It's supplied with a 90-degree adaptor, a 2.5" hose, and a sturdy rubber gasket.

Here's a list of materials you'll need for the DIY dust separator:

  • Dust Deputy DIY Kit
  • 5-gallon bucket
  • 90-degree adaptor
  • 2.5" hose
  • Sturdy rubber gasket
  • Mounting hardware

Step 1: Begin with Buckets and Plywood

Start with two buckets, preferably freebies rescued from the trash. Both buckets were originally used for bulk laundry detergent storage and don't have lids.

The large bucket will go on the bottom to receive the dust and waste, while the small bucket will be flipped upside down on top as the Thien Baffle separator.

You'll also need some salvaged scrap plywood, like the 1/8" thick plastic-coated desk top mentioned in the article. This will be used to create the plywood disk with a cutout.

The cutout is traced out from the circumference of the top bucket, and then measured and marked for the cutout. This disk is the basic heart of the Thien Baffle design, and it's essential for separating dust from the air.

Step 3: Finishing the Top

In Step 3, we're focusing on finishing the top of the DIY dust separator.

The upper bucket needs to be secured, so I made some wooden L-shaped buttons to act as clamps to hold it down. These clamps are designed to be removable, allowing for easy access to the interior.

I'm using two shop vacs, a large old one and a small salvaged unit, which happen to have some extra implements that can be repurposed for this project. I'll be using a crevice tool as the inlet to the cyclone, and a surplus floor sweep will serve as a collar to be attached to the cyclone.

The crevice tool needs to be cut down to size, and the floor sweep requires its bottom to be removed, leaving just the collar. This will ensure a secure and easy attachment to shop vac hoses.

A small door-shaped outline was marked on the side of the upper bucket and cut out using an oscillating tool.
