Donating your old AC unit can make a significant impact on reducing electronic waste. The average American generates about 4.4 pounds of electronic waste per day, with air conditioners being one of the largest contributors.
In the United States alone, over 9 million tons of electronic waste are discarded each year. This staggering number highlights the need for responsible disposal and donation of electronic items like AC units.
Donating your AC unit can not only reduce electronic waste but also provide a fresh start for someone in need. Many organizations accept working AC units and refurbish them for distribution to low-income families or communities.
By donating your AC unit, you can help keep it out of landfills and reduce the demand for new, resource-intensive units.
Donating AC Units
Donating AC Units can be a lifesaver for neighbors in need. You can donate your extra window unit to Community Forklift, a non-profit organization that provides free home essentials, including air conditioners, to those in the community who are most in need.
The impact of one window unit can be immeasurable, especially for those with chronic health issues, the elderly, pregnant, and young children. Summers in the DMV can be oppressive, and without air conditioning, it can become a dangerous season.
You can donate window or in-room air conditioning units less than 10 years of age at Community Forklift's reuse warehouse anytime Monday through Friday, 12 to 5 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 5pm.
If you don't have an extra unit, you can still make a difference by donating funds to support Community Forklift's HELP program. This program provides air conditioners to those in need for free.
Here are three ways you can donate or support Community Forklift's work:
- Drop off: Donate window or in-room air conditioning units less than 10 years of age at Community Forklift's reuse warehouse anytime Monday through Friday, 12 to 5 pm, and Saturday and Sunday, 10 am to 5pm.
- Donate funds: Make a donation today to support Community Forklift's HELP program which provides this service for free to our neighbors in need.
- Tell a friend: The more people that know, the better! Tell your friends, family, or anyone who might have an extra unit laying around.
Air Conditioner Collection
Angel of Edgewood collects air conditioners for seniors in the Greater Hartford area, but they need help from the public to collect more units.
The non-profit has given out 25 air conditioners in the last five days alone, and their phone has been ringing non-stop with requests from senior housing complexes and hospitals.
Angel of Edgewood was burglarized twice over the last month and a half, and the stolen air conditioners were specifically meant for senior citizens.
You can help by donating air conditioners or making a donation to purchase home air conditioners for seniors in need.
The non-profit's founder and CEO, Jendayi Scott-Miller, emphasizes the importance of taking care of vulnerable populations like seniors and people with disabilities.
