To create a bed murphy bed instructions PDF, you'll need to gather all the necessary materials and tools before starting the DIY assembly process.
The first step is to unpack and organize the components, including the bed frame, hardware, and instructions.
Measure twice and cut once to ensure accurate cuts for the bed frame and shelves.
A standard murphy bed typically requires a 4' x 8' wall space, so make sure you have enough room before proceeding.
You'll need to drill screw holes and attach the bed frame to the wall using wall anchors for added stability.

Preparation
To start creating your Murphy bed, you'll need to prepare the materials and workspace. We used a track saw to cut our plywood sheets to their final dimensions, and you can refer to the Keyed diagram and cut list for exact measurements.
Make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials before proceeding. The plans come with a Keyed diagram that shows you how to lay out each of the parts on your plywood.
Cutting the plywood sheets accurately is crucial for a successful project. We used a track saw, but you can use whatever tool is most convenient for you.
Now that you have your materials and workspace ready, you can move on to the next step.

Assembly
Start by arranging the shelf assemblies on the floor and the mattress panels, placing the less attractive side facing up as the mattress will cover it up.
The row of holes at one end of each mattress panel should be at the end near the rockers, so make sure to align them accordingly.
Adjust the pieces so everything lines up well before adding screws, as the holes in the edges of the shelves, rockers, and bullnoses should align with the holes in the panels.
Use 2 ½-inch wood screws to hold everything in place and prevent shifting around, ensuring the seams stay tightly together and are positioned over the centers of the bullnose and rockers.
Add the remaining screws to secure the platform in place, making sure the shelves extend out evenly on each side by 1 3/8-inch.
If needed, flip the platform over with a partner and position the mattress rest under the row of holes at the end of the platform, lining up with the holes in the mattress rest.
Attach the mattress rest with 12 2 ½-inch washer head screws, starting with the screws on the ends.

Hardware and Mounting
Drill out holes for mounting hardware carefully, as the majority of them need to be on Parts G (Verticals) and Parts B (side rails). Take your time on this step.
The plans provide a template for the hard parts, making it easier to drill accurate holes. This is especially important for achieving a professional-looking finish.
Aesthetic changes, such as making the front panel all one piece, can be made to suit your personal style. This can be done by modifying Part "E" on the cut diagram.
Use 2 ½-inch wood screws to hold the bed platform in place, ensuring the seams stay tightly together. This will prevent the platform from shifting around.
Typically, studs are spaced out every 16 inches, but this may vary depending on how your house was built. Use a stud finder to locate the studs behind the drywall where you want to install your Murphy bed.

Drill Holes for Mounting Hardware
Drill holes for mounting hardware on Parts G (Verticals) and Parts B (side rails). The plans provide a template for all the hard parts, so take your time on this step.
It's essential to be precise when drilling holes, as the majority of them need to be drilled on these two parts.
The plans specifically mention "do not build this in any other way", so consider whether you want to make any changes before proceeding.
To make the bed look like a cabinet, the plans suggest a seam down the middle, but you can choose to make it all one piece like we did, especially if you want a shiplap effect.
Headboard Shelf Assembly
The headboard shelf assembly is a crucial part of creating a functional and comfortable bed frame. Connect the lower back brace and headboard shelf in three places using the shelf hinges and ½-inch screws in the predrilled holes.
You can use a bubble level to ensure the shelf is level, or download a leveling app on your smartphone. Place one cabinet brace into position flush with the cabinet top. Fasten the pieces with four pilot holes and 1 ½-inch screws into the cabinet sides at an angle.

The shelf folds down when the bed is in use, making it perfect for placing a lamp or alarm clock nearby. Most smartphones have leveling apps available for download, which can be a convenient alternative to a bubble level. Five screws through the cabinet top into the cabinet brace secure the shelf in place.
Attach Eye Bolts
Attach eye bolts and mattress straps to secure your Murphy bed in place. The two eye bolt screws will pass through the hole in the platform and into the holes on the shelf.
To attach the strap, pass one end through an eye bolt and then pass the buckle through the loop, pulling to tighten. Repeat on the other side and adjust as needed.
The correct position for the catch should be as far as possible from the other half of the lock while still functioning well. Mark the holes you need to drill based on where the catch should be positioned.
Use a tiny drill bit provided to pre-drill the holes.
Frames and Kits
If you're looking to uninstall a DIY kit panel bed, you'll need to carefully follow the steps outlined in the instructions.
First, place moving blankets on the floor in front of the cabinet, and open the bed while holding the panel down to remove the mattress. Removing the handles is also recommended to make the panel easier to place on a flat surface.
To proceed, you'll need to lock the panel open using the Arm Locks, and then remove bolt #2 from both sides of the frame. Loosen bolt #3, but don't fully remove it - you'll need to leave the nut on the bolt.
Here are the steps to uninstall a DIY kit panel bed:
- Place moving blankets, etc. on the floor directly in front of the cabinet
- Open the bed, and remove the mattress, while holding the panel down
- Remove the handles, so the panel can be placed down onto a flat surface
- With the panel held mostly down by a helper, remove the spring covers
- Lock the panel open using the Arm Locks
- Remove bolt #2 from both sides of the frame
- Loosen bolt #3 from both sides but leave the nut on the bolt
- Remove the panel by tilting the foot inward slightly and lifting up and out at an angle
- Set Panel Aside if possible. Be careful as this will be very heavy.
- Unlock the Lift Mechanism Arms (steel tube required - be VERY careful!)
- Remove the screws holding the cabinet to the studs.
Panel Frame
The panel frame is a crucial part of a Murphy bed, and understanding how to work with it is essential for a successful installation or uninstallation. The panel frame is typically made of steel and can be quite heavy.

To uninstall a panel bed, start by placing moving blankets or similar materials on the floor in front of the cabinet. This will help protect the floor from any damage.
The process of uninstalling a panel bed involves several steps, including opening the bed, removing the mattress, and taking out the handles to allow the panel to be placed down on a flat surface. It's also a good idea to have a helper assist you with this step.
You'll need to remove the spring covers and lock the panel open using the arm locks. Then, remove bolt #2 from both sides of the frame, but be careful not to fully remove bolt #3, as you'll need to loosen it but leave the nut in place.
To remove the panel, you'll need to tilt the foot inward slightly and lift it up and out at an angle, making sure to clear the front toe. This will be a heavy panel, so be careful not to drop it.
Here's a summary of the steps to remove the panel:
- Remove bolt #2 from both sides of the frame
- Loosen bolt #3 from both sides, but leave the nut in place
- Tilt the foot inward slightly and lift the panel up and out at an angle
- Clear the front toe and set the panel aside
Door Frame Kit

When working with a Door Bed Murphy Bed Frame Kit, it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Here are the steps to remove the bed frame:
To remove the mattress, you'll need to hold the frame down while lifting it off, as described in the kit instructions.
Carefully raising the frame back up is crucial to avoid any damage or injury. Un-attaching the leg actuator arms requires some care, as they can be fragile.
Removing the springs requires the use of locking "vise grip" pliers, which can be found in the kit instructions. A helper is necessary to hold the frame in the vertical position while doing so.
To lift the bed frame out of the yoke assembly, you'll need to be careful not to scratch or damage any surrounding surfaces.
The yoke assembly can be uninstalled from the wall or floor by following the manufacturer's instructions.

DIY Guide
Building a Murphy bed can be a rewarding project that optimizes your living space. This guide provides detailed plans and practical steps to create a space-saving bed.
First, gather the necessary materials and tools, including a sturdy frame, hinges, and a locking mechanism. A Murphy bed typically requires a dedicated space with a ceiling height of at least 7 feet.
To start building, assemble the frame and attach the hinges to the wall. The hinges should be adjustable to ensure smooth operation.
Next, attach the bed slats and mattress support system to the frame. This will provide a comfortable sleeping surface.
To add a touch of elegance, consider adding a decorative trim or molding to the bed frame. This will also help conceal any gaps or imperfections.
Finally, install the locking mechanism to keep the bed in place when folded against the wall. This will ensure a safe and secure sleeping environment.
